Survive sadistic human experiments

The Outlast Trials is a first-person POV horror survival game from Red Barrels, the developers of the hit horror games Outlast and Outlast 2. This is the third installment in the Outlast franchise, but it takes place during the Cold War, making it a prequel to the first two games.

The Outlast Trials is the first game in the series to include action elements found in games such as Dead by Daylight. In this game, players can play solo or co-op with up to three other players, to survive the brainwashing and mind control experiments of the Murkoff Corporation.

Get terrified with friends

Red Barrels has taken gameplay elements from other genres that make The Outlast Trials an entirely different experience compared to their first two Outlast titles. Unlike its predecessors, it offers multiplayer gameplay, which is miles different from the solo experience many players enjoyed. It also has action elements, as players are given tools to defend themselves, such as throwables that can slow down or stun enemies.

Being a prequel, this co-op horror game enriches the Outlast lore. It introduces two new main villains in the form of Mother Gooseberry, a Leatherface-like murderous woman, and Coyle, a psychopathic former police officer. The wicked trials take place in several set pieces such as the Sunshine Orphanage, an amusement park, a doll workshop, and replicas of locations outside the facility.

Technically and visually, this game is the best in the series. However, the elements it borrows from other genres can turn off fans of the franchise who mostly enjoyed the horror of being helpless and alone. The first Outlast games were hide-and-seek simulators where wits and the environment were the players’ only weapons. This latest installment is far different. Fortunately, it allows solo gameplay for those who prefer it.

Project Breach

This substantial update for The Outlast Trials introduces a fresh trial, "Pleasure the Prosecutor," for players to navigate. It also unveils a new environment, "Downtown," where players encounter Franco "Il Bambino" Barbi, the murderous child-like adversary, in action with his unique, teeth-adorned shotgun. The update presents new challenges, such as "Reunite the Family," where players must reunite an orphan with their parents, and "Deface the Futtermans," a test of mental fortitude.

This update further introduces a new player ability, the Jammer Rig, which proves invaluable for survival in Murkoff's Trials. The Jammer Rig allows you to disable electronic devices, a crucial advantage for those who maintain composure under pressure and who can strategically utilize this ability during the trials. It can be extremely handy in times where you are getting close to being caught, and this ability is a definite must-have.

Project Breach brings a formidable new enemy to The Outlast Trials, "The Molotov." This enemy employs a potent ranged weapon that launches Molotov Cocktails, creating large fire zones upon impact, posing threat to players within. If you appreciate customization, the Unholy Night DLC pack is available. It offers a collection of eight Legendary Outfits, various items, and decorative art for player cells, and unique player icons for use within the game.

Room for improvements

Despite its strengths, The Outlast Trials is not without its shortcomings. Technical issues, such as occasional glitches and performance hiccups, can sometimes disrupt the gameplay experience. The game's difficulty curve can also be uneven, with some trials proving significantly more challenging than others. The high system requirements are also needed, leaving players with lower-spec hardware searching for other alternatives. Still, this is an AAA game worthy to be played as intended.

A great addition to the Outlast universe

The Outlast Trials, while expanding the series with multiplayer and action elements, may alienate fans of the original games' emphasis on stealth and helplessness. Despite technical issues, high system requirements, and an uneven difficulty curve, it offers a unique co-op horror experience with a rich lore and improved visuals. The inclusion of new content, such as the Project Breach update, continues to evolve the game with new challenges and gameplay mechanics.
